AI-as-a-Service: What the Model Means for Small Operators
AI-as-a-Service is a broad label. For a small operator, the useful version is usually a repeatable AI-enabled outcome packaged for a defined customer—not simply reselling the phrase 'AI.'
Start with an outcome
Examples might involve content workflows, research assistance, intake, internal knowledge retrieval or other repeatable tasks. The customer should understand the business result without needing to care which model sits underneath it.
Productized versus bespoke
A productized service uses a repeatable scope and process. Bespoke consulting can command different economics but creates more delivery complexity.
Platform dependency matters
If your service depends on a third-party AI platform, pricing, capabilities and terms can change. Your offer and customer communication should account for that dependency.
Where custom GPTs fit
A custom GPT can be part of delivery, a lead magnet, a customer-facing tool or an internal workflow component. It is not automatically a complete business model on its own.
